2007 NOMA Conference
Embrace: Community Commitment, Community and Change the theme for NOMA ‘s 2007 Conference, October 25 – 27 held at the Walt Disney World, Contemporary Hotel and Resort in Orlando , Florida . A unique setting and equally as unique was the event, boasting a variety of professional seminars, social events and design competitions. This premier gathering of design professional and students included approximately 350 people including 17 sponsors and 19 exhibitors at the Product Fair.
The first day of the conference began with a welcoming by Carlton Smith, NOMA President and concluded with the Host Chapter party at Orlando City Hall , allowing participants to experience the downtown core. Friday began with a tour of the Animal Kingdom theme park, followed by the Luncheon in the afternoon, sponsored by PBS&J. Chaunecy Mayfield was the luncheon keynote speaker, where he challenged the established architects to bridge the generation gap by engaging the young attendees at the conference and in their practice. The Bro’s Arts Masquerade Ball topped off Friday’s program where attendees were adorned in themed mask and costumes. The final day of the conference began with the Business Session and concluded with the Awards Banquet and a dynamic keynote address from; Dr. E. Lance McCarthy, President and CEO of the Metropolitan Orlando Urban League. Dr. McCarthy’s address reinforced the conference theme. And what celebration at Disney would be complete with out an appearance by Mickey Mouse who graced us with his presence on the final night.
This was a challenging year of preparation and planning for the team organizing the conference events. Adding to the pressure of hosting a national annual conference was the fact that at the beginning of 2007 the NOMA Orlando Chapter had just begun and only three of the members had ever attended a NOMA conference. We started with a core group of five which eventually grew to twenty. The success of the conference is directly attributed to the NOMA Orlando membership’s dedication and perseverance to raising the bar. The conference attendees, NOMA President and Board members expressed their gratitude to the NOMA Orlando, Conference Planning Committee for hosting an informative and fun filled event.
NOMA Orlando Day
October 4th 2006 was proclaimed by Orlando ’s Mayor Buddy Dyer.
